From the Allegheny Mountains to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland’s westernmost outpost takes extreme recreation to all new levels. Though recognized as a winter playground, Garrett’s white water and rugged hiking and biking trails as well as swimming, fishing and boating provide year-round excitement.
With 65 miles of shoreline, Deep Creek Lake is Maryland’s largest body of fresh water. Adventure Sports Center International, the world’s only artificial, mountaintop, white-water course is located in McHenry. Enjoy rock climbing, kayaking and hiking.
Garrett is also home to Wisp Resort, Maryland’s largest ski resort and Garrett College.
Western Maryland boasts numerous state parks including Big Run, Casselman River Bridge, Deep Creek Lake, Herrington Manor, New Germany and Swallow Falls State Park.
Oakland is the county seat and was a retreat for many famous Americans, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone.
